How you got into sports?
I started volleyball through school. We played a tournament with the school team and the local club in Amstelveen, Brother Martinus, invite me for training. At that time I was 17 years old and always football till then :).
Why you became a coach?
I was studying at the Academy for physical preparations and the club I was playing for, asked me to be come the coach of the womens team. I was 21 at that time.
Biggest challenge in coaching during your career till now?
I would say I had 2.
First of all was accept ing the position of head coach of the Dutch men’s nat team. That was in 1989, I was very young (34)and the team was at that time already European top.
The second big challenge was accepting to build up the GB team from scratch and prepare them for the London Olympics 2012
What’s your advice for young athletes?
Follow your heart and never give up to fullfill your dreams!
What’s your next sports goal in near future?
At the moment I’m coaching a team in 1Liga, Poland. Our goal for next season is promotion to the Plus Liga.
Are you a fan of other sports, do you watch other sports in your free time?
I’m a big fan of football. My favourite team is Ajax, Amsterdam. I try to follow all their matches on tv.
I also like to watch the Premier League.

Who was your idol when you started coaching? Is there somebody who is still giving you an advice or you follow other good coaches?
My tutor was Arie Selinger. I’m nów old and experienced enough to give advice to other :).
Never the less I watch a lot of volleyball and working methods of other top coaches.
You are never too old to learn!!
